Hurricane Melissa is predicted to strengthen into a rare category five cyclone as it turns toward the Caribbean island, bringing deadly flash flooding and rock falls.

The hurricane, which registered wind speeds of up to 120 mph as of 6:00 AM GMT, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is anticipated to reach land by early next week, according to hurricane specialists.

Warnings of power cuts and disruption to utilities have been issued as the hurricane generates up to 30 inches of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as 4m above normal levels. "Take cover without delay," locals have been urged.

This hurricane is the thirteenth cyclone in this year's Atlantic season, which typically ends in the eleventh month.

Highest-Level Storm Threat

A category five hurricane is the most intense classification, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

Although Melissa is expected to diminish in strength to a Category 4 hurricane before reaching the island, authorities said there was "almost no noticeable change in the general consequences" upon making contact with land, and that the hurricane will be "at least that intensity" when it hits the island.

"An extended timeframe of harmful winds and torrential rain are underway and will cause devastating and dangerous flash flooding and many rock slides," counseled climate experts.

Jamaican Prime Minister the official commented: "I realize that there are countless citizens who are anxious, who are very concerned, and with good reason: worry is natural.

"But the most effective method to manage worry and any nervousness and concern is to be prepared."

Locals are being advised to fortify their houses with sand barriers and wooden boards, and to stock up on essentials.

Alerts are also active for areas in the neighboring country including the main city, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is expected to bring analogous consequences by the middle of next week.

Rock slides presently generated by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to emergency services.

This weather system is forecast to move across Cuba by the middle of the week before traveling via the Greater Antilles and entering the Atlantic Ocean.

By the moment it arrives at the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have weakened to a category three storm.
