In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an bold commencement to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
