The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
