As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered inhaling severely hazardous air that fell into the "critical" category.

Alarming Pollution Readings

Various sections of Delhi showed an AQI above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the safe limit set by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than safe limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Recent Developments

Since 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that covers the city as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the current regional administration appealed to the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and environment".

Court Verdict and Implementation

To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, the court agreed to the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited periods throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded air quality peaking around midnight to some of the worst measurements observed during the festival in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to declining air quality in Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the capital have remained as a serious problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Around celebratory seasons, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the environment has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was formerly considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

The problem in the capital is attributed to a combination of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, development work, garbage fires and smoke from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, farmers regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, producing hazardous pollution that becomes contained over the city as colder air descends.

Health and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple investigations.

These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing 10,000 premature mortalities each year in the city.
